Advertising space

Is it a good idea to give a space somewhere in your site for advertisers? Like a banner or something?

I think it is wise to do that. But only if the advertiser is completely targeted in your niche. You help your users and get the benefit of some extra cash.

So it really should be related to your site or else it will distract your own visitors right?

I agree with the both of you. What you advertise to your site should be related to your niche. Otherwise, both advertisers and publisher will not benefit much.

That's one of the mistake new people to web building make. They think because they may have traffic, people are just buying anything they see and that is not the case. People need to think about the buying decision. If they see something that has nothing to do with the niche, they just think you are not qualified in your niche.

Also, more people are apt to go directly to the source.
