ways to avoid supplemental results
It seems there is being a lot asked lately about supplemental results. Everywhere I go, people are wondering how to get out of the supplemental results from google.
Two of the more common things that have happened to me are the duplicate content issue which put several of my pages in the supplemental results and the other one was incorrect meta tags.
In the first instance, I had used a couple articles from article directories. Because other people had used the same articles and they had been indexed elsewhere, my pages were considered duplicate content. The articles were really good and I knew they were of benefit to my users so I wanted to keep them. To get the pages out of the SR, I added a 3 paragraph summary at the beginning of the article. Then at the end, I added a review saying why the article was valid. This gave me fresh content and the page was removed from the SR.
The other instance is where I launched a site figuring I would do the meta tags in a couple days when I had time. DUMB IDEA
My site got indexed and all 643 pages had the same meta tags. Again, they ended up in the supplemental results. So I sat all day one day and changed every title and description tag and eventually got the pages out of the SR.
