where to put the menu

This may be out in left field but where is the best place to put the menu when designing a site?

Is there any advantage over having the menu on the left hand side versus the right hand side versus across the top of the page.

I kinda think people are more inclined to read it on the left or top but are there other benefits to a specific placement of the menu?

I wondered about that too. Instinct tells us to look on the left because we start reading from the left and move to the right. But what made me really think about it was the blogs.

It seemed all blogs had the topics and archives on the right hand side and I wondered if there was some advantage.

I tried it a couple times on my website but it only confused me when designing so I went back to the traditional left side.

at the top is good if you don't have many links. down the left if you do. drop downs can be confusing with to many options. menu at top and bottom is good but generally use what is right for your site.. dont think too much about how good it looks, thing about usabillity.
